How Are Dark Scar Camouflage and Light Scar Camouflage Different?
Scars can look and heal in many different ways—some fade to a pale white, while others darken into noticeable patches. Because no two scars are the same, the approach to camouflaging them must also be different. In paramedical tattooing, the method used depends on whether the scar is lighter or darker than the surrounding skin.
Light Scar Camouflage
When a scar appears lighter than the client’s natural skin tone (known as a hypopigmented scar), the goal is to darken the scar so it blends in.
-
The artist carefully mixes diluted skin-tone pigments to match the client’s unique complexion.
-
These pigments are gently deposited into the scar tissue, building color and reducing the sharp contrast.
-
Over a series of treatments, the lighter scar begins to match the depth and undertone of the surrounding skin, making it far less visible.
Light scar camouflage is ideal for surgical scars, stretch marks, and injury scars that have healed to a pale or white color.
Dark Scar Camouflage
When scars heal darker than the natural skin (often called hyperpigmented scars), the challenge is completely different. Instead of adding pigment, the artist works to neutralize and lighten the dark area.
-
This is done using specially formulated pigments that follow the principles of color theory to counteract the dark tones.
-
For example, certain corrective colors can reduce the appearance of deep browns or uneven undertones.
-
The goal is not to “cover up” the scar, but to soften its dark appearance until it blends seamlessly with nearby skin.
Because darker scars are more reactive—especially on higher Fitzpatrick skin tones—the process requires more caution, smaller sessions, and careful spacing between treatments.
The Key Difference
-
Light scars: Add pigment to darken and match surrounding skin.
-
Dark scars: Use corrective pigments to neutralize and lighten the area.
Both techniques rely on an artist’s advanced understanding of color theory, skin behavior, and healing. Done correctly, scar camouflage can make scars significantly less noticeable, restoring balance and confidence for clients.
✨ At AZ PMU Academy, we teach both light and dark scar camouflage techniques, equipping artists with the skills to help clients of all skin types and tones.
